RSA Exhibition 2011

Text that accompanied the Exhibit

“A map of the world that does not include Utopia is not worth even glancing at.” (Oscar Wilde)

The working title of this new body of work is ‘The Utopia Project’.  I am rendering the surfaces of landscape-fragments and imaginary maps and exploring what is going on beneath them.  In a way this is a search for ou-topos (no-place): the seemingly solid construction of land and maps might start shifting underneath our feet, giving way to nothingness.

A place that is neither named nor known.

A place that is like the gap between heaven and earth.
